Autumn Adventure Week 50 2009
Steve's Review
This was our third visit to Husky Holidays, the previous two for the Husky Special
in the last week in January. This time we opted for the last week of the autumn
season (6 to 12th Dec) and, as usual, we were not disappointed.
We decided to take the train from Stockholm to Ostersund, with one change
at Sundsvall, which is a 5-hour journey (3 hours by fast train,
and 2 by standard commuter) but well worth it if you want to see
a bit of Sweden. We were met by Kim and Bolt (the house dog) at Ostersund
station, followed by the well-remembered drive to Munkflohogen.
The farmhouse, the smells, the sound of the dogs, were just as we remembered.
We got reacquainted with the dogs as we fed them that evening, accompanied
by the usual barking and howling (hi Pluto). We sorted our gear for the morning,
and then had a good old chinwag with Kim over a delicious meal.
After breakfast we spent more time saying hi to the dogs over feeding and poop
scooping (trust me on this, it can be fun). Then, after a short walk with Bolt
(an energetic lunatic) and Petrus, the pup, we got down to harnessing the dogs
for the first run of the week. I have to admit, I love this part; the personalities
of the dogs really show at this point, some are quiet as you harness them,
but most are completely insane, and the noise is incredible.
Being out on the trails with the dogs is something I personally will never tire of,
and as I have said before, it is too hard to describe. Come and see for yourself.
I could write a full page of reasons to come here, but only one sentence not
to - that being, if you don't want to be involved in caring, feeding, and learning
about the dogs. If you get the chance, take advantage to groom the dogs
as they love it, even if they don't need it! This time with the only guests being
Kimmie and myself, we really got to know Kim much more than previous visits,
as with 7 guests to look after previously there simply wasn't time.
But over lovely lunches and dinners and long chats, we realised how many
talents this lady has. I would urge anyone to experience a week with Kim,
Bolt, Whisky the cat, and the Huskies.
It is something that will stay with you always and, if you are anything like
Kimmie and me, will want to do over and over.
Kimmie's story
This was such a different experience to our previous visits. The things I would
like to add to Steve's comments are as follows:- As Steve has said, Kim is such
a talented person and while we were happy to work with the dogs,
as that is what we came here for, she is very keen to ensure that we enjoy
the week as a holiday experience too. I celebrated my birthday on our second
day and Kim made it more memorable by cooking a special delicious meal for us.
The days out in the snow with the dogs are always just brilliant. However,
the grooming session we had with all of the dogs was just fab. Some of the
dogs wanted to play, so we just played instead, and some (namely Solan, Smil,
Nansen and Julius) absolutely loved being groomed. Smil snuggled his head
under my shoulder and I didn't want to move away. However, time to exercise
the dogs time came and I had to be strong willed and leave Smil to pine for
more attention for a while!
This was a very special visit for us and we got to
know Kim much more than previous visits. For us, it felt more than an owner/guest week.
Steve and I both felt, as we left Kim and Bolt at the airport, that we were leaving
friends. All I would finally say is that we so miss all of the things we enjoy on our
holiday and when we come across any familiar smells at home we just look at
each other and pine to be back in Munkflohogen.
