Steve’s story–
If you’re looking for a relaxing, pampering holiday this is definitely not for you.
If you don’t want to get involved with getting to know, and feeding, the dogs,
moderate hard work, knowing what, and why, then book a beach holiday!
If you want an experience that will stay with you always,
then you have come to the right place.
Reading previous guest reviews are great but still
do not convey what you will enjoy.
There is an old saying “behind every great man there is a great
woman” in this case it should read “behind every great man,
there is a great woman rolling her eyes!”
We had a few quiet giggles at Bergsvein’s philosophies
and the following smile and quip from Kim.
Bergsvein and Kim, in a lovely, understated way are great company,
(and she was a life saver), thanks for the Vodka, Kim.
But do not be deceived, in the dog yard there is only one boss,
and (rightfully so) the only concern is for the dogs, and getting it right.
Here, we got the best advice possible for sledding “trust the dogs!”
(thanks again Kim).
I won’t try and tell you about being out with dogs,
or describe the scenery, I could not do either justice,
come and see for yourselves, I will simply say they are both amazing.
Out on the run, Bergsvein is completely unflappable but has a wicked
sense of humour (glad overflow was explained at the start of this review).
This would have been even better appreciated before my sled started
impersonating a submarine, thanks again Bergsvein ;-)
So I will finish with saying thank you, to Bergsvein and Kim; trailblazers and
ice fishermen extraordinaire, Lassen and Stan the man; the tireless
(and future Iditarod racer) Jenny; our fellow mushers;
and the real stars of the show, the dogs.
And Kim’s addition
(Kim, the guest, not owner, although this did cause some confusion
and amusement at Bergsvein’s expense… sometimes)
Well, what an experience.
All of what Steve has said above plus it was all about the following :-
the anticipation before we arrived; the panic at the airport on finding we could not
buy any wine etc to take out with us; the excitement of getting your dogs harnessed
and ready to go; the noise of the excited teams when ready to go
(you have to be there to believe it); the pleasure of the thank you song after
feeding time; the fun of trying to avoid ditches and trees (??);
the butterflies in the morning; the hard work (if you want to join in),
the very cold night in a tent while drying out your gear over an open fire;
the relaxing evenings and especially the delightful massage;
Kim’s cooking and Bergsvein’s sense of humour!!!!!……….We will be back!
And finally…. It was lovely to share the experience with
Aggie, Chris, Nicky, Wynand and Soren. Best wishes to all.
